For those that allow more than just the administrator to ban, do you have any sort of guidelines for this activity? What do they look like?

Thanks,

Patrick

Currently I do not have banning set up for moderators, and don't think its necessary. However if I did and had to create guidelines they would definitely be very detailed with plenty of examples of things to look for if you think a person needs to be banned, etc.

I would also require a reason being posted in our Problem Users forum to see if the ban was legit and needed to be done. Smile

Yeah, I keep ban limited to myself, at this time, as well.

I do allow others to ban as there would be no way that myself and my co-admin would be able to handle the volume. We have guidelines in place but it is a continual challenge. We also use an infraction system which has it strengths and weaknesses but seems to be working.

It's difficult to create perfect guidelines that are not open to interpretation so it's key that there is continual feedback being passes through.

I also don't allow members with a post count higher than 500 to be banned by anyone than me. It's not that they deserve special treatment, more that they have a stature in the community that will need to be managed.

All my administrators and moderators have banning privileges. However, before a perma-ban is issued to any member who is active, we make certain that the decision is unanimous.

No one bans except for me. I don't want any issues since in the end more people in the admin panel mean more potential issues. I bad very scarcely, so it's not needed to have an army of "banners" in my forums

Currently our two Super Moderators can ban. Also we have it set up so that after 3 warnings, there's an automatic ban.

I allow my moderators to ban under certain agreed-upon circumstances. If we have a spammer or someone posting porn, they can ban the account immediately without consulting the rest of us. I use a hack where they can document the reason during the ban process (it also captures which moderator performed the action).

For established members who may need to be banned, we discuss those situations as a group so that everyone can weigh in on what's the best course of action. In the end, I have final say and would be the one to actually ban them.

I'm the only one who can ban on all of my sites. I have a private area where my staff post evidence for any rulebreaking, just like Patrick wrote in his book. (But I also did this before I wrote his book).

We will also discuss every potential ban, and though I listen to them carefully I will still be the one making the decision. I do this because I want my staff to learn what I consider as reasons for banning, and by doing this I also tell them to bring in all potential cases that could be a reason for banning.

This used to bring some work for me, but in time they have learned where the limit is and I have seen an increase of internal discussions where the staff discuss among themselves before they notify me.

Any of my supermods, global mods and ast. admins can issue bans as needed. Spammers and flame warriors are shot on site, other issues require discussion and is done as a last resort.
